Brazil Nuts

In continuation of talking about Brazil (because the world cup is here!!!) let’s talk about Brazilian Nuts. Brazil Nuts are very unique and filled with amazing nutrients that are beneficial to our health. Brazil nut trees are found in the forest regions of Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru. They are in fact one of the longest living, and tallest trees in all the tropical rain forests. They can grow up to 50 meters tall and are said to live 500 to 700 years! The pods that hold the nuts are large and similar to coconut. It takes about 14 months for them to mature after pollination. Although Brazil nuts are high in calories, they contain great quantities of vitamins, anti-oxidants and minerals. They are a great source of vitamin E, selenium, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B-6, copper, magnesium, manganese, potassium, calcium, iron, phosphorus, and zinc. Brazil nuts also has many culinary uses as well such as, being used in fudge, puddings, pesto, fruit and vegetable salads, desserts, soup as well as meat and vegetable dishes.
